Did you meet us at FibreEast? We hope you had a great time at the event and came away inspired and laden with fibrey goodies. Here’s some more information about what we do here in Thamesreach (and in the wider Society for Creative Anachronism) and how you can join in.
We’re all about recreating historical skills and pastimes, trying all sorts of crafts and activities from the Middle Ages and Renaissance. Obviously this includes lots of crafts, sometimes reproducing items using familiar skills such as embroidery and sometimes trying to understand techniques that are almost lost in the modern world.
Crafting at SCA events takes lots of forms. At our local revels we often run workshops, with members of the group sharing their skills or leading a group experiment. Sometimes we get together to work on individual projects, snack and watch costume drama together.
At larger weekend events around the UK, Ireland and further afield there are often a variety of classes, on subjects as diverse as “Introduction to natural dyeing”, “The Evolution Of Astronomy” and “Drafting Common 16th Century Hat Patterns” (taking just a few examples from the schedule of one such event) and an “Arts & Sciences” competition or display, where people can show off their projects. The society’s awards system also recognises prowess in crafting, awarding the title of Laurel to our leading artisans.
In addition to crafting you can try archery and sword fighting, music and dancing, cooking and feasting and all kinds of other things.
We’re a diverse and inclusive group, we value all participation, from serious experts to complete beginners and all ages, including tiny tots attending with parents/guardians.
Take a look at our upcoming events and we look forward to seeing you at one.
