4:00 pm: Silly Revel
December 9, 2017 –
Once again the Silly Revel lightens our hearts in this dark and wintery season and the Golden Ninny contest returns.
This year's theme is silliness in song and dance.
Last year's winner, Genevieve la Flechiere, announces the challenges:
"1. New verses to 'Martin said to his man': this is a well-known silly tune of our era, and lends itself well to saying you saw ridiculous, unlikely things while, perhaps, having had a wee bit too much to drink.
For a reminder of the tune and traditional lyrics, see: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WA0NQYtwDw4
"2. Other silly songs to perform: silly medieval preferred, for performance or sharing at the revel. Please come prepared with music, or recordings to sing with (saved on your phone is best to work with our speaker).
"3. Silliness in dance: we have some silly dances (miming brawls come to mind) but silliness can include flirting, poaching partners, and Lord Marx' favourite, the Maltese Brawle. I can teach some, but will gladly let others lead, since I have to judge the worthy recipient in the end!"
Other plans are the 'usual' potluck feast: bring a dish to share. We've not gone hungry yet.
Note that this revel is a later start than usual, so please show up promptly and prepared to decorate, play, dine and perform.
We ask for a £6 contribution to hall hire, but there is no charge to first time visitors to our shire.
If you have questions or need to borrow medieval clothing please get in touch.
