Shire business meetings

We meet once a month in the pub, to share a pint and talk over plans for the shire activities.

Ye Old Watling (link opens to Streetmap.co.uk location)

29 Watling Street, London, EC4M 9BR

Close to Bank and Mansion House Tube stations, and St. Paul's cathedral.

It's well connected by Tube, DLR and Silverlink, and is in the heart of the historic City of London - Watling Street is one of the oldest
Roman roads in England.

Next meeting: Monday 21 April, 2008

Upcoming meetings:

  • 21 April
  • 19 May
  • 16 June

Local revels and tournaments coming this year

We hold local gatherings in North London, steps from Archway Tube station, to pass the afternoon in good company, enjoy some food, drink, dancing and arts of the Society.

Local tourneys are held in the armoured combat marshal's garden, in South London, close to Hampton Court.

Tentative revel dates for this coming year (to confirm with the hall). Announcements for activities will be on the Thamesreach list.

  • 19 April, 4pm to 10pm - Activity day and evening revel: As we have many folks now in the shire who are new to costuming, we will run an afternoon of laying out, cutting and starting to stitch up simple tunics, towards having folks comfortably attired for the coming summer events, particularly Coronation in June.

The humble tunic, often called a T-tunic in the SCA, is the base of most clothing styles through Western Europe in our period of
study. It's wearable from end of Rome era well into the 14th century, and then continues to lurk under more fitted and elaborately cut garments as underwear.

We probably cannot start and finish a garment in an afternoon - especially for several people at once! - but we can make a solid
start, and get a lot of work done, and you can finish the details at home.

If YOU want to take part in sewing something new, please contact Genevieve privately.

    Prep reading: Cynthia Virtue's pages

In particular, her 'Basic Garb' and her 'Tunic Worksheet' pages.

Let me know if you want to either take part, or help along!

Stitching evenings in the pub

A cheery band of handworkers have started gathering on the first Monday of the month at Ye Olde Watling, to share a pint and work on current projects.

Come join us for an hour of beer, chat, and handwork: bring your sewing, embroidery, knitting or other portable project. Medieval projects encouraged, but not absolutely required.

If you're on the Thamesreach newsgroup, you'll get an auto-reminder a few days before the event.

Aim for 6-ish start on the following dates:

  • Monday 5 May
  • Monday 2 June
  • Monday 7 July
  • Monday 4 August, etc.

Merger of Southern UK groups - polling is going ahead

At the recent viceregal tourney, the southern UK shires of Thamesreach, West Dragonshire and Mynydd Gwyn discussed amalgamating into a new branch - a 'super-shire', province or a barony.

All three shires have agreed informally to move onto the next step - polling for a change of status to our branches, the preferred branch type, and possibly the proposed name and armory.

The poll for armory and name suggestions has closed - the options are now on the wiki site.

If you're a resident of one of these shires, and would like to be part of the so-far informal discussion of what, why, and when, please join the Yahoogroup started to host that chat.

Known world heraldic symposium 2008 is in Thamesreach!

It's official - next year's symposium is in London. This is great news for Drachenwald, and for our shire.

What's KWHS? Read the Q&A on the Society site.

The event wiki is up!

If you want to help us out with this event, contact Genevieve.

Scribal guild

We hold periodic gatherings for scribes at weekends, to work on current projects, and share our skills. Contact Genevieve the seneschal, or Mistress Nerissa, for more information.
