Thamesreach invites you to join us for a weekend event with opportunities for the good folks of these Isles and visitors from afar to test their skills in many forms, to try new pastimes and to enjoy feasting and merriment.
In addition to archery, armoured combat, fencing and arts and sciences there will be a period team sporting challenge open to all ages.
There will be a game of Stool Ball, open to all ages. We will broadly be following the instructions set out here: http://slumberland.org/sca/articles/stoolball.html
Two teams will be formed, of equal size.
Play will last for approximately 1 hour from the first ball bowled until last innings are called, and then as long thereafter as it takes to complete the last innings.
The only balls used during the game will be soft junior cricket safety balls (so head protection is optional). All bowling must be under-arm. Bats will be provided.
All players must wear garb, but modern footwear is fine.
Very young players may (if they wish) be assisted by an adult when batting/running.
Players unable or unwilling to run, for whatever reason, may nominate a runner, so long as they do the batting themselves.
Ribbons for the victors!
Turn your opponents into Swiss cheese!
There will be a “Swiss Elimination” Tournament using a format borrowed from chess, which allows all participants to fence in each round. Thamesreach marshal in training Ingvar Gråhök explains how the tournament format works in more detail here: http://www.thamesreach.org/swiss-elimination-tournament/
If you wish to attempt any authorisations, please get in touch with Cecily on the email address below. Time permitting, we should be able to accommodate such requests, with priority given to any first authorisations happening before the tournament so that fencers can participate if they succeed.
Archery during the event will include a Portsmouth Round Competition and a Beginners’ Shoot.
Some bows belonging to Thamesreachers may be available to borrow in order to have a go, but if you have your own, please do bring it.
The range will also be open for as much practice as time and marshal-availability allows.
In the morning there will be the St Michael’s Tournament: The Knights of St Michael call all Vennans to the field to stand against the Tennans of the company. The afternoon will feature a Southwark Bear Pit Tourney.
Arts and Sciences
Classes will include embroidery with Eleanor and Geometry for Persian and Arabic decoration with Shirin. The A&S space will be open throughout the day to work on your own projects and there will be some materials available for making things even if you have not brought anything. This will include air-drying clay for our “Clay on the Day” A&S competition, to be settled by public vote.
Please bring any items you have made for the Open Competition. This is open to any item you have worked on which has not previously been entered into a competition. It is a chance to show off your work, get feedback from judges and spark interest, inspiration and conversation about what you’ve made.
If you’ve never been to an event before, see the First Event Guide: http://www.thamesreach.org/first-event-guide/
